Sustainability – step by step

For us, sustainability means thinking long-term – for our guests, for our region and for the future. We are well aware that running a hotel consumes resources. That is why we strive every day to act more consciously and to organise our processes in a sensible way. We’re not perfect, but we’re taking it step by step.

  • Local & sustainable: our breakfast

Wherever possible, we work with local partners. This reduces transport distances whilst supporting local businesses.

For breakfast, we deliberately choose selected products:

    • Bread and rolls from a local baker
    • Eggs from a local farm
    • Jams and honey from local suppliers
    • Fairtrade coffee
    • and much more

At the same time, we take care to minimise food waste as much as possible. That’s why we plan our breakfast carefully and tailor it to the actual number of guests:

    • We order bread rolls every evening exactly according to occupancy
    • When there are few guests, we offer a lovingly prepared table breakfast instead of a large buffet
    • We ask guests for their approximate breakfast time so that we can plan for the freshness of the food
  • Less packaging, more reusable items

We are trying to reduce single-use packaging step by step and are consciously opting for reusable solutions.

    Examples from our everyday life:

    • Milk jugs instead of small single-use milk cartons
    • Sugar jars instead of individual sugar sachets
    • Drinks at the Maxibar in reusable glass bottles
    • Soap and shower gel in refillable dispensers in the rooms
    • Consciously avoiding single-use giveaways
  • Conscious use of water and resources

In our day-to-day operations, too, we take care to use resources as sensibly as possible.

One example is our cleaning policy:

    • Rooms are cleaned every two days as standard
    • Towels and bed linen are changed at the guest’s request

We are also taking a step-by-step approach when it comes to energy:

    • Around 80% of our lighting has been converted to LED
    • We are gradually replacing existing light bulbs the next time they need changing

This allows us to save water, energy and cleaning products without compromising on comfort.

The size of our building also helps:
As a city centre hotel with cosy, compact rooms, we require significantly less energy for heating than large hotel complexes.

We have deliberately opted for seasonal air conditioning. This runs from around April to October. Whilst it ensures cool nights during the hot summer months, on cold spring or autumn days it functions as an efficient heat pump, thereby replacing energy-intensive heating.

  • Social sustainability – responsibility towards people

We want our staff to enjoy working for us, as this is the only way they can pass on their enthusiasm for hospitality to our guests.

    Our measures for social sustainability:

    • Fair pay for all team members
    • Support and further training so that everyone can develop their skills
    • Family-friendly working hours and a warm working environment
    • Open communication and appreciation: every opinion is heard
    • Accurate recording of working hours thanks to a working time account
    • Long-term collaboration: many team members have been with us for many years
  • Electric mobility right outside the hotel

For guests with electric vehicles, two electric charging points are available on site.

    • Convenient charging overnight or during your stay
    • Powered by green electricity
    • We are also happy to make the charging station available to non-hotel guests
  • Digital rather than paper

You’ll find plenty of information about your stay in our digital guest folder.

We also send our invoices by email as standard, rather than printing them out. This saves paper and, at the same time, gives you quick and easy access to your documents.

  • Travelling in an eco-friendly way

Speyer and the surrounding area are wonderful to explore by bike, on foot or by public transport.

Our hotel is ideally situated for a sustainable journey: the S-Bahn station is just 600 metres away. For guests arriving by bike, we offer a lockable bike garage right next to the hotel with charging facilities for e-bikes.

If you’re visiting without your own bike, you can hire one from us to cycle comfortably into Speyer city centre or around the surrounding area.

Even without a bike, getting into town is easy: the bus stop is right outside our hotel, so you can simply leave your car behind and reach the city centre in an eco-friendly way.

Small steps, big impact – here’s how you can help

Sustainability works best when we work together. Lots of small everyday choices help to save energy and resources without compromising on the comfort of your stay.

If you’d like, you can support us by doing a few simple things:

Ventilate properly
Please do not use the heating whilst the window is open. It’s best to ventilate briefly and thoroughly, then close the window again.

Reuse towels

We’re happy to change towels if they’re left on the floor. If they’re hanging on the hook, we’ll assume they’re to be used again.

Switch off lights and electrical appliances
When you leave the room, it really helps to switch off the lights and electrical appliances.

Explore Speyer on foot and by public transport
All the sights, restaurants and cafés are easily accessible from our hotel by bus – and the more active among you can even get there on foot or with our hire bikes. This saves you a lot of walking and lets you explore the town at a more relaxed pace.

Did you know?
  • Changing your towel one less time a week saves an average of around 10 litres of water
  • Airing out a room briefly rather than continuously ensures fresh air whilst saving a lot of energy.

Award for our commitment

We have been awarded the DEHOGA Environmental Check in Gold for our initiatives. Among other things, this assesses energy consumption per overnight stay. Our figures are as follows:

  • 5.3 kg CO₂ per overnight stay
  • 19.7 kWh of final energy per overnight stay

The DEHOGA Environmental Check in Gold is the highest award within this certification scheme and confirms our responsible use of energy, water and resources in our hotel operations. We were awarded Gold straight away upon our first certification in 2023. In 2025, we were successfully recertified at Gold level.

Our journey continues

Sustainability is not a one-off project, but an ongoing process. We regularly review where we can make further improvements and implement new measures step by step. In doing so, we ensure that we implement measures that make sense for us as a family-run business and are sustainable in the long term.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please do get in touch. We look forward to hearing from you.
